April 12: National Drop Everything and Read Day!

Happy 95th Birthday, Beverly Cleary!

Different covers...same story!

In class, we started reading one of Beverly Cleary's books called Ramona Quimby, Age 8 . In chapter two, Ramona's teacher, Mrs. Whaley,  introduces D.E.A.R time to her third graders. During this daily thirty minute period, students are allowed to read anything they like.

To honor Beverly Cleary's birthday, April 12 is officially called National

Drop Everything And Read
Day!

Throughout the day in Mrs. Yollis' class, students will be dropping everything and reading. Many students are bringing special books to read during our D.E.A.R. time!

Here is an interview of the incredible Mrs. Cleary. She explains how she became a writer and where she gets ideas about her characters.

Here is a trivia game about Ramona and her friends on Klickitat Street!

Which books have you read by Beverly Cleary? Please share a favorite part!

Who is your favorite character and why?

Please share some facts you learned about Beverly Cleary from the hyperlinks!

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
Beverly Cleary was one of my favorite authors growing up! The first book I read was Henry Huggins and then all of the Ramona books. Ramona was my favorite characther because she was full of spunk and always getting herself in trouble. Here is a fact you may or may not know: She grew up in Portland, Oregon. I was born and raised Portland and I know of Klickitat street and the areas she writes about in her books!

I haven't read her books in years, but I always remember how much fun her books were to read.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am looking forward to Drop Everything And Read day (D.E.A.R)! I love reading, so I plan on bringing two chapter books and three picture books.

I have had a great time reading Ramona Quimby, age 8 so far and I can't wait to finish it! I love all Beverly Cleary's books, and I have read Ralph S. Mouse, Runaway Ralph, and Beezus and Ramona. I also have watched Ramona and Beezus the movie.

My favorite character is Ramona. I like her because she funny, but she doesn't mean to be funny! I especially like her on the first day of school on Ramona Quimby, age 8 because nothing can spoil her mood!

I learned on World Book that Beverly Cleary's favorite book as a child was Dandelion Cottage by Carroll Watson Rankin. I would like to read that book some day.

Another fact I learned is that when she was in first grade she had trouble reading, she partly blamed that on an unpleasant first grade teacher, and the fact that she did not like the books she was required to read. In second grade , with the help of her favorite teacher she became a good reader. By the time she was in third grade she was an excellent reader and found a lot of joy in reading.

    I have a question:

Is it a coincidence that Beverly Cleary's birthday is on the same day as Drop Everything And Read day?

    Your student,
    Hannah

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
Happy Birthday to Mrs. Cleary! I read Runaway Ralph at the beginning of the year and liked it. My favorite character was the mouse becauce he had a great adventure riding around on his minature motorcycle.
What is your favorite Beverly Cleary book and did you read it as a girl or a grownup?

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I love Beverly Clearly! My favorite book so far is Ramona the Pest. I like the part were the students are trying to spell their names. There is a Q in Ramona's last name, and she made it into a cat because Mrs. Binney told her it would be easier.

Now I am reading the book Ramona The Brave I hope the ending will be wonderful.

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love the post about Beverly Clearly!

One of my favorite books is
    Ramona the Pest.

A funny part in the book was when Ramona and her class were playing Duck, Duck Goose and Ramona was it. A girl named Susan was the one to run away. Ramona loved the curls on her, so Ramona pulled her curls and then Ramona got in trouble! She had to sit on the bench. That was my favorite part of half of the story!

I hope Beverly Clearly has a wonderful birthday!

    Nicole :}

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis and students,

What a wonderful day to have I just love it.

We in Australia should have National Drop Everything and Read Day. I feel a lot of people would take part and hopefully get more people to read and realise the beauty what a book can bring once you pick one up to read.

How wonderful Beverely Cleary is 95 may you have many more birthdays.

    Have a super day everyone.
    From your blogging pal,
    AA.
